Decarbonization and European Regulation (ETS and FuelEU)

Fit for 55: towards more sustainable maritime transport

The European Union has approved the climate package Fit for 55, whose objective is to reduce CO₂ emissions by 55% before 2030.

This plan includes two key measures that affect maritime transport:

  • EU ETS (European Emissions Trading Scheme)
  • FuelEU Maritime Regulation , to promote the use of renewable fuels

what does the EU ETS entail?

From 2024, shipping companies connecting European ports must offset their CO₂ emissions by purchasing emission rights.

The application is progressive:

  • 40% of emissions in 2024
  • 70% in 2025
  • 100% in 2026

In the case of Trasmed, this measure applies only to connections between the Peninsula and Mallorca.

The impact on the ticket can be reflected through a minimum surcharge associated with the regulatory cost.

Our commitment to decarbonization

Trasmed is part of the Grimaldi Group, a world leader in ro-ro cargo, which has been investing for years in:

  • Hybrid vessels with system Zero Emissions in Port
  • Use of onboard batteries to eliminate emissions in port
  • Preparation of ships to run on alternative fuels such as green ammonia
  • Specific decarbonization and energy efficiency departments

Conventional maritime transport continues to be the most efficient means of emissions per ton transported compared to other transport systems.

We work to create an environment in which each person can develop their talent on equal terms.

The Management actively ensures compliance with these principles, in line with article 14 of the Spanish Constitution.
